Triton Solar Decathlon at the University of California, San Diego, is competing in the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon (OCSD). For this competition, our goal is to innovate and introduce the feasibility of sustainable ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) to low income communities in the Logan Heights area. Logan Heights has one of the highest persons per home densities at 12.5 people per house compared to 2.5 for San Diego; the city is affected by heavy pollution from the nearby shipyards and Interstate 5, placing it in the 91st percentile for pollution burden in California. The design motivations were made based on input from the community such that the ADU can assimilate with the existing architecture while implementing innovative technology to mitigate climate change effects. The project is just the beginning to gradually shift marginalized communities to healthier eco-friendly living conditions. Our team is also heavily focused on research and development and we are always open to new ideas!
Human-Powered Submarine (HPS) is a UC San Diego based student organization that designs, constructs, and competes with a human-propelled, fully flooded submarine. Each year, students dedicate their time to manufacturing and testing their submarine in preparation for the International Submarine Races (ISR) in Bethesda, Maryland, and the European International Submarine Races (eISR) in Gosport, UK. Students on the team come from a variety of backgrounds and majors in order to develop skills in machining, CAD, composites, and leadership. Many have gone on to pursue research or internships related to their work on the team. While the students’ specific interests are varied, their dedication and enthusiasm are reflected in their final product.
Our research group worked on using LAMMPS simulations to model atomic interactions. We are researching how to model the electrical double layering that occurs in batteries. This student run project is associated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Nano-Engineering and Technology Society (NETS).
